Archdeacon F. G. Evans has resigned the Archdeaconship of Taranaki; on account of ill-health. He became vicar of St. Mary's, New Plymouth, in 1896, and was appointed Archdeacon in. 1912. The- decision was announced at a meeting of the Archdeaconry Board to-day.

Brigadier G, Palmer, Judge Advocate General of the Indian Army, arrived in 'Wellington yesterday, by the lonic. He visited the Dominion two years ago, and on this occasion is going to Milford Sound, as well as engaging in fishing at Taupoand Rotorua. His retirement is due to- take place almost immediately, and it is quite possible that he will settle permanently in the Dominion.-

Lieut.-Colonel E. B. Sniythe, D.5.0., Adjutant-General, leaves Wellington on Saturday for the South to take up his position as Chief Staff Officer, Southern [Command. Lieut.-Colonel Smythe, as a, bey, received a grounding in. military training with the Christchurch Boys' High School Cadets, and in 1900 joined the Koyal New Zealand Artillery. In 1902 he -was officer commanding the Wellington detachment. of the Koyal New Zealand Engineers, and later held a similar position-at Auckland. In 1913 he was in command-of the E.N.Z. Artillery at Dunjedin'. . At an early date in the Great War he was General Staff Officer Tyne Defences, and in Juljy 1915, became General Staff Officer, Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and continued to hold , important positions throughout the war period. Eeturning to New Zealand he was attached to' Defence Headquarters for a period, and later wa« transferred to Auckland. During the past six years Colonel Smythe has been Adjutant-General. He was mentioned three times in dispatches, and, in addition to the D.5.0., holds the 1914-15 Star, the British WaT Medal, and the Victory Medal. -
