CONFIDENT TONE

WORK FOR EVERYBODY

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, This Day

Interviewed , this morning, the Hon. W. B. Taverner stated that the Prime Minister would have no difficulty in fulfilling the promise that unemployment would be overcome in five weeks. He expected the engagement of the: men to eomrnejee within a few days.

The Minister stated that most of the men to be taken on the railways at this stage would be artisans. He was completely in agreement with the Prime Minister that it was a bad thing for skilled men to get the feeling that the country had no use for tliem. The work available in the forest service would be of a less skilled nature.

Speaking generally of unemployment, Mr. Taverner said thai the pessimistic attitude of unemployment being inevitable was unworthy of a young country, and the Gjjj^tnment would prove it to be quickly capable of being overcome. If tho Government alone could do that, what could not be done if every employer gave active support? Assuming that there were 6000 unemployed, they could bo placed in a day if every employer took one, and what a lively stimulus that would impart to business. If last season's twelve million credit balance was not in circulation, that indicated lack of confidence among the trading community. "Confidence and employment go together," said Mr. Taverner, "and good business follows both."
