CUP TO EVENING
MEADOW LABK WESTS .GILLIES
HANDICAP
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") OAMARU, 7th October. ■ The Kurow'Jockey"Club's Meeting -was held in fine but windy weather. There was a large attendance) the club's, usual circle of patrons being augmented from the hydro-electric works, where five hundred men are working. The course was in good" order, and there was some excellent sport. The totalisator handled £840G, compared with £6956 10s last year. HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. Racing opened with the Highweight Handicap. Glenrowan.-Haze,- and Handsome were withdrawn, and in the field of seven Fresh Breeze.was a little' better'backed than Some Toff, with Wild Work and Accredity also fancied. ■ Wild Work led out _of the. straight, with Some Toff and Carinthia next, while Fresh Breeze was last. Going along the back Accredity ran into second place, v\;hile Carinthia dropped back to the rear along with El Nido and Fresh Breeze. Racing round the turn Accredity joined Wild Work in the lead' Some Toff and Whiffier being at the head of the others. ■ Wild Work was in front at the entrance to the straight. Some' Toff then moved up, and, taking the measure of Accredity, he won easily by three lengths. Carin(;hia came with a strong finishing run, but Wild Work stalled him pff by.a head, the pair being two lengths behind the second horse. Fresh : Breeze never looked dangerous. The winner was always going well, and he looks like doing his owner further service. NOVICE PLATE. Twelve, scratchings reduced the field for the Novice Plate to nine. El Boa was a hot favourite, and her backers were never uneasy. The start was unfortunate, Corn Money, Waterpower, Night Parade, and Crown Mystery being badly left. El Boa was the smartest out, followed by Impertinence and Haulage. At the end of two furlongs, El Boa was threo lengths in front, with Haulage just showing oiit from Impertinence and Jock o' Hazeldean. They ran like this to the straight. HI Boa was going easily at this stage, and she only required shaking up in the straight to win comfortably by two lengths. Jock o^ Hazeldean finished best of the others, and he beat Haulage by half a length. Impertinence was a length behind, with Handsome a bit further back. El Boa is a five-year-old sister to Mount isoa. She won a race at the South Canterbury Hunt Meeting in July, and she shaped^ like being.a Useful performer. Jock o Hazeldean ran a sound race, and will nnprove. Night Parade, a three-year-old brother to First Raid, looks a good sort; while Corn Queen, a promising three-year-old filly by Nightraid, is likely to do good_seryice for the North Otago owner/ Mr. W. Gardiner. WAITAKI TROT. Enchantress and Fre'o Pointer were scratched for tho Waitaki .Trot, and in a new of nine Lady Zephyr was a strong favourite, though Onoto, King's Cup, and -Nor wester were all well backed. Tiny Biugen reared u V and fell before the stnrt. .Linda Chimes was first to show out but after going two furlongs, Nor'wester and Tmy Bingea- took charge, with King's Cup handy. Tiny Bingen drew clear a little further on, and led past the stand from King's Cup and Nor'wester, with Pando Pointer and Lady Zephyr not far away. Lady Zephyr broke turning into the back stretch, where Nor'wester drew out from Tiny Bingen, with King's Cup and Pando Pointer close up. They raced without any chango to the home turn, whore Lady Zephyr was making up ground. Once in the straight, Nor'wester drew away mid won easily by five lengths from Tiny Bingen. Lady Zephyr was sis lengths away, followed by Pando Pointer. Then came Onoto, who registered a good performance after going off badly. The winner, who hails from Waimate, was making his first appearance in a race. He is a six-year-old grey hy Logan Pointer from Wild Myrtle, and ho looks as if he could bo improved a lot! : KUROW CUP. s The withdrawal of Royal Game, Narrative, and Gold Brick left a field of five j r" 5 rP 1"'0^ Cu P- Blact Mint, ridden by C. lMnerson, was a strong favourjte. but all the others were supported. Taboo and Evening were first out, but Membo soon took charge, leading Evening, Town Bank, and Taboo past the post in close order, with Black Mint -four lengths away. Black Mint then moved up, and at the sis furlong post he was nt the tail of a closely-running field Membo was still going well in front at the home turn, but at tho entrance to the straight Evening challenged the leader, while Town Bank dropped back beaten. A little further on Evening appeared to have Membo s measure, and gradually asserting herself, she beat Membo by nearly a length Two lengths away, Taboo beat BJack Mint by a head for third money. . Evening ran a good race for more than a mile in the Geraldine Cup, and the outing did her a lot of good.. She looks as it she would win more races. Membo put up an attractive performance for a novice in'open company. Taboo raced much better than in the Geraldiue Cup, while Black Mint went well in patches. Town Bank hit out well for a mile on the hard ground, and then retired. PUBLICANS 1 HANDICAP. Solgele, El Boa, Crossbow, and Captivate were_ the. scratchings for the Publicans' Handicap. This left a field of ten, and Mount Boa was a hot favourite, carrying twice as muoh money as Some Toff, who° in turn had twice as many admirers as Night Effort. The start was unfortunr.te for Mount Boa and Battle Screen, who were slow to move. Dry Area was smartest out, followed by Acredity, Night Effort, and Impertinence. .When three furlongs had been covered, Some Toff made a forward move, and at the home turn he and Impertinence were at the head of the bunch behind Dry-'Area,-while Mount Boa and Page Boy were moving up. When fairly in the straight Dry Area retired Some Toff being left in front with Mount Boa, Page Boy, and Night Effort. Finishing on strongly, Some Toff held his place comfortably, and won by a length while a great battle for the places saw Page Boy beat Mount Boa by a head with Night Effort another head away ' This was the second success of Some Toff during the day, and he should "o on improving yet. Mount Boa was unlucky and probably would have won with a good jump out. HYDRO-ELECTRIC TROT. The nine acceptors lined up for the .Hydro-electric Trot, Nov-'Wester beiri" penalised 48yds for. his earlier win. Kid Logan was a hot favourite, but he settled his chance by breaking at the start while Caetiron and Starina also failed to
go off well. Almont Cling showed out at the start, and passing the stand he had Tiny Bingen, Great Scott, Imshie, Onoto, and Free Pointer following in that order. Almont Cling gradually increased his advantage, and half a mile from home he was fully a dozen lengths in front of Tiny Bingen, with Great Scott closing up", while Nor'-Wester and Free Pointer were nest. Almont Cling commenced to tire rounding the turn, and he was in trouble at the entrance to the straight. Great Scott, then took charge, but it was his final effort, as he retired a little further on. This left Tiny Bingen in front, and she won easily by four lengths from Onoto, who ran past the tiring field in the straight. Great Scott was ten lengths away, with Almont Cling fourth. The winner deserved her success after a good performance when she filled second place earlier in the day. GILLIES HANDICAP. The Gillies" Handicap attracted five starters, Caterpillar, Gold Brick, and Martis being scratched. All the candidates were backed, Meadow Lark being a pronounced favourite. Meadow Lark was first to show out, with First Raid and Royal Game nest, but Royal Game soon lost his place,- Meadow. Lark goin" on two lengths in front of First Raid and Tnpaway. Two furlongs further on Tnpaway dropped back to last, while Koyal Game and Night Lad started to improve their positions. - Meadow Lark raced into the straight well clear of the field, which was headed by First Raid with Royal Game and Night Lad handy. Meadow Lark held his place and won ea.!tr^'? Tl, r h length from Royal Game, T 1* j n xr' d,. a Bim.ilar distance away thSc' ■ Lad was a poor fourth The winner was making his first .appearance this season, and his performance was a good one in view ■of the more important engagements ahead. Royal Game registered a good performance after being unable to hold his. place in the early stages. Tnpaway ran a long way below her best, form, while First Raid will do better with a stronger- rider The three-year-old Night '■ Lad' was rimnin" about m the straight, but will improve on this effort later. ■ ' HAKATARAMEA HANDICAP. For the Hakataraniea Handicap, the concluding event of the meeting, Narrative, Fresh Breeze, Crossbow, Gay Fashion, Solgele, and El Nido were scratched, leaving a neld of seven. Glenrowan was a hot favourite, carrying nearly as much as the combined totals of Haze and Top Speed,, who were the only others seriously supported. Haze was first out, and at ta? /^ of a furlong he was joined by Wild Work and Top Speed, the three drawing right away with a lead of four lengths.. Three furlongs from home Top Speed was a length. in front of Wild Work, with Haze a length away, while Glenrowan, two lengths further back was-at the head of the others. Wild Work was done with at the home turn Glenrowan took the lead at the entrance to the straight, and won easily by a length and a half from Haze, while a similar distance away came Felony, who finished fast, followed by Top Speed The winner is better than ■. average hack class, and he. will be winning soon in open company.: ' ' .
