AT NAPIER PARK

STAKES TO SHREWD

MERRY DAMON WINS RAILWAY

■ (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")

' ". NAPIER, sth October. In marked contrast to the wintry conditions that the previous week at the Hawkes Bay Jockey" Club's 'Meeting, the Napier Park Racing Club was favoured with an ideal day on the occasion of their Spring-Meeting. The attendance was really good, and in spite of the fact that in two events only one dividend was declared, the totalisator staff handled £13,783, against £8682 10s last year—a substantial increase of £5120 10s. PRINCE OF WALES STAKES. On the strength of his good showing at Hastings War Worn was installed favourite for the Prince of Wales Stakes, but there was plenty _of support for Sea Scout and Jenny Diver. From a good start Sea Scout and Jenny Diver were first to become prominent; but at the end of the first furlong the order was Princess Betty, War Worn, Jenny Diver, Ruby Step, and Alliance. These were all well placed entering the straight, and over the Vfinal stages Princess Betty did best to beat Ruby Step by half a length. Manui.re was a neck away third,-followed by War Worn and Sea Scout. ; -A. TRIAL HANDICAP. Auda was an odds-6n favourite for the Trial Handicap, carrying more than double the amount invested on I'm Alone. Manifesto, Best Friend, and Don Quixote, evenly backed, followed in.order of favouritism. Don Quixote and Head Serang were quickest away from the barrier, but Best Friend soon took charge, and led to the straight from Manifesto, I'm Alone, and Auda. The leaders, running wide, allowed Auda through on the inside, and he beat Best Friend by'two lengths. I'm Alone was a close third. Manifesto was fourth. Auda won all out by a fair margin, but was not the good thing that the betting indicated; 'in fact, L. Morris^ his rider, had much to do with the-success. Best FrieDd showed good form, and, ridden by an experienced horseman, must have won. I'm Alone and Manifesto'both went failraces. , ■ GREENMEADOWS HURDLES. Peshwa finished: iip: favourite for the Greemneadows Hurdles, but Trincess Elizabeth, Alarie, and Jen all came in for strong support. Princess Elizabeth made most of the running, her closest followers over the first mile being Real Estate, Jen, and Rakauponza. With half a mile to go Jen went ;to. the front, to eventually wiu pulling up from High Heather. Alaric was a poor third and Peshwa fourth. Rakauponga.fell at the last jump _Jen won with ridiculous ease; High Heather ; jumped . slovenly in the early stages and lost inuchgrpund, but he finished fast. Alarie ran his race in patches. PARK STAKES. Kick Off carried nearly half the investments on the Park Stakes, the other four starters being very' evenly supported. Blimp began bfest, and he led past the stands from Kick Off, King's vJest, and Shrewd. The last-named was rushed to the lead half a mile from home, but Kick Off was not far away as the field raced into the' straight. .Over the last furlong Shrewd ran on well to win easily from Kings Jest, who got up to beat Kick Off. ' '

Shrewd registered a fair performance in his initial attempt in open class. Kick .Oft had every chance, but the fast pace set did not .give the old gelding much chance under his substantial load. King's Jest went a fair, race; and will soon produce his best form.. AHURIRj HACK HANDICAP. _ Chopin had a ; slight" advantage over Sylvan Dell in the betting on the Ahuriri Hack Handicap, while Potency was almost as-well supported. .Brown Sugar began smartly and led Keen, Potency, and Uiopin over the first jcouple of furlongs Keen and Potency then took up the running and led 'into the straight from Brown bugar. ■ In the straight Sylvan Dell came last and won easily from Keen, with Unopm and Brown Sugar close up Although Sylvau Dell won easily at the tonsil, her task must have been made so py the. poor, horsemanship displayed on the majority o£ her opponents. Keen was always well placed, but Brown Suirar should have paid a dividend. Chopin and l'otency were not well handled.

TARADALE HIGHWEIGHT. Zippor was a pronounced favourite for the Taradale Highweight. Break o' Day and Mountain Heath were well supported Jirom an indifferent start Mountain Heath was soon in front, being followed by Queen's Choice, Break o' Day, and Zippor to the five-furlong post. Heie Zippor ran to the lead, and was followed into the straight by Break o' Day, Rouex, and Queen's Choice.' In the final stages several runners appeared to hold fair chances, but Queen's Choice finished best to beat Break o' Day by a head. ■Mountain Heath and Roues were very close to the dividend payers. r\aaf ttlß_f. xcellent euowing against Kick Off at Hastings, it was expected that Wueens Choice would be well supported but she was neglected by backers/and although the. winning margin was small, Queens Choice won well. With L. Morril in the saddle, Break o' Day made a good showing, but Mountain Heath and Roue" aid not race up to expectations. RAILWAY HANDICAP. Merry Damon was installed a solid favourite for the Railway Handicap, Royal i.ineage carrying more money than the other three starters. Pliramcrton began smartly to lead up thp back from Merry Uamon and Royal Lineage. At the fouriurlong post Toxeuma ran up to Plimmerton, and the pair were just clear of Royal Lineage at the straight entrance, but over the last furlong Merry Damon came fast to win easily from Toxeuma. Plimmerton was a fair third, Tjust in front of the unlucky Royal Lineage. After beginning well, Merry Damon lost his position, but his final run landed him a very easy winner. Toxeuma went quite a good race, and will be all the better for the outing. 'Royal Lineage was very unlucky, as when holding a winnings chance plimmerton came over on him, sendin" him back half a dozen lengths. COUNTY HACK HANDICAP. Seeing what an excellent race My Own ran m the Hawkes Bay Guineas, it did not come aB 'a surprise to find her installed a pronounced favourite for the County Hack Handicap. Repay, Malahat, and Potency all claimed fair support on the totalltL r" ■ y , n was sickest away from tne^barrier, but Potency immediately raced to the lead, bemg followed up the back by My Own, Curtsey and Gipsy Fate. As the held raced into the straight Potency, My Own, Repay, Gipsy Fate, and Clarendon were all well placed, but Clarendon' finished best to beat My Own by half a length . Considering that Clarendon ran well at Hantrngsa week previous, his dividend was remarkably good, and he won on his merits My Own had every chance, and her backers were luckyJ;o- get back a portion of their money. Well ridden, Repay might pS2 WOII, Te. Awaha ' Malahat, and Potency all.went good races. After the lace L. €f. Morns, rider of My Own was brought .before the Judicial Committee to. explain his mount's interference at the cnt.cal stage with Potency.
