A NEW ARCHDEACON
THE CENTRAL SCHOOL
(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, Ist October. The trout fishing season opened today. It is reported that there are more and larger fish in the Maitai Elver this season than there wero last year. , : The Rev. James Alexander Jcnnyn, 8.A., vicar of Greyinouth, has been appointed archdeacon of Mawhera. Jlr. Jermyn is tho second native of tho Nelson1 diocese to receive such an appointment, the first being the Vencr-! able G. W. York, who is retiring next December. The new archdeacon, who is 38 years of age, was born in Marlborough, and is the son of Mr. James Jermyn, of Awatore. He was educated at St. John's College, Auckland, and at. College House, Christehurcb, from which ho graduated B.A. in 1914. He was ordained deacon in 1915 and priest in 1916. ; Archdeacon Jermyn was curate of Karamea. 1915-16, chaplain ■in tbe N.Z.E.1 1. 1917-19, curate of Holy Trinity, Stroud Green, London, 1919----1921. On his return, to New Zealand he" was appointed to Murchison 1921-24, vicar of Westport 1924-28, and vicar of Greymouth in October, 1928. Probably he is the youngest archdeacon in New Zealand.
The Main Highways, Board has instructed that men be employed immediately on the Lyell and Mnrcliison ends of tho Buller Gorge road, which lias been completely blocked to traffic since the earthquake on 17th June. Compared with September, of last year, there was an increase in the Customs returns at Nelson last month. The amount collected was £4405 12s 9d, against £2358 12s Bd. Excise beer duties amounted ■to ■ £1084 9s lid, against £807 10s 9d.
In order to consider the draft of a Bill covering proposed legislation in connection with the newly-formed New Zealand Institute of "County Clerks, a conference of West Coast-Nelson County /Clerks has been arranged to be held at Murchison on 19th October. A meeting of the Nelson Education Board executive and tho Central School Committee was held last evening, with Mr. F. W. O. Smith, chairman of the board, presiding. It was resolved to recommend the'board to close the Brook street school and provide for the accommodation of the children at the -Central School when the latter is remodelled. The proposed plans of the improved building provide for eight class-rooms in the front part of the present building and a special classroom on the eastern side, also rooms for the headmaster and for the assistants. Two cloakrooms are alsq provided for. ,
By defeating tho Huia seniors by 14 points to 3 at Motueka on Saturday the Wanderers Rugby team won both the Benefit Shield and the Huia Cup for the season.
Mr. F. Sharland, tho president, presided over an executive committee meeting of the Nelson Dofenee Rifle Club last evening. It was decided to purchase two seta of "feathers," one each for the senior and junior competitions. The feathers will be shot for on a challenge principle. The_ final of the Nelson Ladies' Golf Club junior championship resulted in a win for Mrs. Davidson over Mrs. Campbell-Smitb at tho nineteenth hole. The final for tho MacKay Cup was played off between Mrs. Robison and Mrs. C. Harley. Mrs. Robison, after being 2 up at tho turn and also dormy 2, lost the match on tho 20th green.
