FRENCH CLUB

VISITORS FROM THE TOURVILLE

On Thursday night a special (ami extra) evening1 -was held by. the French Club in honour of the visit of the French cruiser Tourville. Captain Abrial and a party of officers attended, and after the presidential address by Mr. F. F. Miles, Monsieur Bouillet also welcomed them on behalf of the French members of the club. Captain Abrial responded, and mentioned the pleasure it gave him to be present at the French Club on the last night of their stay—also to have met so many people in Wellington who spoke that 'language well. Various musical items followed, beginning with selections from Debussy and Chopin by Mr. Trevor Fisher, Miss Maijovie Bennie sang "Mignon's Song" (in costume), and Miss Ailsa Dillon gave the Flower' Song, Madame Benge recited "La Revenaute." M. Balham contributed a monologue, "Les Blacboules au Conservatoire," and Misses E. Aitken and C. Smythson danced (in costume). Miss Ruth Reid played the "Meditation de Thais", (violin) accompanied by Mr. Fisher. The playlet "Le Chateau Yquein" (produced a week ago with, much success by Miss M. P. Young) was repeated by request. The parts were taken by Miss Young, Mine, de Filippi, Messrs." Miles and Lochore. The soiree concluded with supper and dancing.

An interesting feature of the proceedings was the dedication of the French flag by Captain Abrial. This flag has lately been imported by the club from Fiance, and is a handsome specimen, of silk embroidered and gold-fringed. Another event o£ interest was the fact that Madame Dechanet M'lntosh had sufficiently recovered from her illness to be present and assist in the •welcome to her countrymen. Madame Bendall (first vicepresident) fulfilled the duties of hostess.
