HOTEL DEFRAUDED
UNPAID BOARD BILL
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post") PALMERSTON N., This Day. Arthur M'Keever, alias Anderson, represented to John Lambert Anderson, hotelkeeper, of Pahnerston North, on 20th June, that he was the owner of a farm on Banks Peninsula) and a? a result of that representation obtained five days' board, worth £3 2s Cd. He failed to pay and M'Keever, appeared before the Magistrate yesterday. Detective, Barling said that when lie accosted the accused, the latter said he had a farm near Timiiru, and had a bank account at Wanganui, and that a young lady was bringing him some money. The woman arrived, but there was no of the accused. Then M'Keever was found hiding behind the ' door of a hotel, and bolted. For the past two months, the only thing the accused had been doing was betting. Detective Barling aud a constable subsequently watched tho movements of a young lady on the railway station until the latter became uneasy and ran across the road to the Oafe de Paris Hotel, where' accused was. She had two tickets for Wellington, aud it seemed that the accused was about to leave town without paying his debts. When being taken to the police station, the accused asked the. young lady to go back and pay for his board and lodging. The accused from the dock said he was only too pleased to pay. his board now. "There seems to be no doubt you misled Mr. Anderson," observed the Magistrate. "Is there anything known acainst him?" Senior-Detective Quirk: "A great deal. In the last eight years he has been frequently bofore the Court." The accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
