CHARGES OF NEGLECT
MR, HOLLAND DEFENDS GOVERNMENT
Speaking in the House of Representatives last night, the Leader of the Labour Party (Mr. H. E. Holland) said that he wholly disagreed with newspaper statements charging the' Government with neglect so far as the West Coast was concerned. Every appeal that had been made to the Government had been answered promptly. There had been no" question, and no hesitation, and no saying, "We cau't find the money." In the fact of a great calamity the Government had found the money.
A Labour Member: "They rose to the occasion."
Mr. Holland agreed that this was the case. He mentioned at a later stage in his speech that he was not sure that £1,000,000 would not be an under-estimate of the amount that would be required to restore the devastated areas. The work of reconstruction had to be undertaken, and there was a field there for absorbing a vast army of unemployed.
