HOME AND SCHOOL
MOUNT COOK ASSOCIATION
Oil Wednesday a well-attended meeting of parents was held in the New Mount Cook School to discuss the formation of a Home and School Association. Mr. W. Simpson, chairman of the School Committee, who presided, said they were looking forward to the promised visit of the Hon. H. Atmore, Minister of Education- It was particularly desired to let him see the disgraceful conditions at the very old infant school. He then introduced the speakers for the evening, Mr. C X). ■Lennie, president of the Island Bay Home and School Association, and Mr. N. Ingram, secretary of the School Committees' Association. - . Mr. Lennie spoke briefly of the great success the Island Bay Home and School Asosciation had had. It was essential that the home and school should work "in harmony with and subject to the direction of the official body; the School Committee. The function of the Home and School Association was to support and assist the committee. Mr. Ingram.said he had already assisted at the inauguration of twelve Home and School Associations in the Wellington! area. The movement was "catching on" all over New--Zealand. -Parental apathy was mainly to blame for backward conditions in the schools. The associations had been effective in dispelling this apathy. ■ It was decided to form a Mount Cook Home and School Association, and the following executive committee was set up: President, Mr. V. W. Kowland; secretary, Mrs. H. Wray; committee, Mr. W. Grant, Mrs. Vango, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Latham, and Miss J. Johnston. The chairman of the School Committee (Mr. W. Simpson), the head teacher (Mr. F. L. Combs), and the infant mistress (Miss L. Morgan) were added to the committee. x The association is to meet on the third Monday in each month.
