CLOSER LAND SETTLEMENT
(By Trteiraph.) (From Our Special Beporter.) PALMEESTON ST., This Day. 'Closer settlement must come " de clared-.the Minister of Labour' (the Hon.^W. A. Veitch) at the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association's smoke concert at Palmerston North last evening, during a brief reference to the Government's land policy. "I am glad to realise that public opinion is becoming much .more optimistic and anxious, about closer settlement. ; Not more than, six months'ago there were few. people even discussing the question, but to-day we find a.strong;agitation developing and; gaining strength all over New-Zealand in the directon of closer settlement.'.' The Minister of Lands,!continued Mr. Veitch, had told them that the number of sheepjand cattle on ; thel :land had increased; the next, thiiig'they had to see to Was that the number of people on the land was materially increased, and he sincerely believed that the policy now being so assiduously pursued was going to have that beneficent effect upon the Dominion."' , . :.":"
