PETONE COUNCIL DISSATISFIED

In -a letter read at the meeting of the Petone Borough Council last night the. Wellington : City. Council stated that Petone Js request .that the:Eastbourne buses should run through Jackson street instead of along the'Esplanade had been refused.' \ •'■■■ • \

.._ The, Mayor; (Mr.', D. M'Kenzie) said that a deputation from the Petone Borough Council had waited on the Wellington City Council Bylaws. Committee, which controlled, the bus routes The position placed, before .the committee was that Petone desired the change to help the tradespeople in the main street, and for the convenience of residents and. visitors who at present had to walk 1J miles from the railway station to the Eastbourne bus. The chairman of the Bylaws Committee made a speech which was hostile to Petone, and the committee had decided that the buses must go down a back street. It was very' unsatisfactory that the Petone Council had no control over bus routes within the borough, although it had control of other heavy traffic. Councillor-B. W. Toomath, .who was one of the deputation, endorsed the Mayor's remarks. < ■ ■■-„... . ,

Councillor J. C. Burns, another member of the deputation, said that the whole thing appeared to have been cut and dried before the deputation got there and that the minds of the committee were made. up, no matter what was said."

The letter was "received."
