CONDUCT OF HOTELS
3RSSPOBT BY THE POLICE
QUESTION OF FIRE ESCAPES
Toe chairman (Mr. E. Page, S.M.) presided at the annual meeting of the Wellington Licensing Committee held in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Other members of the committee also on. the Bench were Messrs. G. Petherick, f! Meadowcroft, M. A. Carr,, W. I. Clark, and B. Darroeh. Inspector Rawle represented .the police.
Mr. Page said that the* report of the Inspector of Police, after giving details of the houses, stated that the conduct of the hotels during the past quarter had Ijeen^ satisfactory. Two licensees had;tieeit'Conxicted, and there had.beeu number'of convictions in respect of people having been found on licensed premises after hours. There were one or two general matters the committee wished to refer to. The first concerned fire escapes, particularly in relation to wooden buildings. The committee wished the inspector to submit to the next quarterly meeting de•tails of the type of fire escape used on each licensed house, with special reference to the old wooden buildings, which probably were a greater danger than the more modern concrete or brick buildings. They wished to see that the fire escapes were really ade/quate and there was proper precaution in case of a sudden fire.
"One other suggestion that comes from the committee/ continued Mr. Page, "is that a representative of the Building Department of the City Council should accompany the police and Health Department's representatives at the annual inspection of the houses to express his opinion on the buildings, alterations, and'proposed alterations." Another matter-was the inspection of liquor. ..■ >■
Inspector Bawle said that the inspection of liquor was a matter for the Health Department. A representative of the Health Department said the practice was to' inspect hotels about which there was §omo suspicion and also houses about which complaints were received. Inspector Eawlo stated' that a City ' Council building inspector had been present last year when all the licensed hotels were examined. Of the total number it was fouud that only five re-' quired attention, and two of them had since been demolished. It was considered the fire escapes were adequate, but s» report, as requested, would be prepared for the next meeting. TRANSFERS.
