SIR HENRY BUCKLETON. K.B.
Sir Henry Buckleton joined the service of the Bank of New Zealand in 1878, at the age of 15 years. Having been born ana educatea in Sydney, he commenced his career with the bank at its Sydney branch, and he remained there until in 1891 he was transferred to the Melbourne branch as actiiigaccountant. In May of the following year he came to New Zealand as accountant in the bank at Hamilton. In the following year he was appointed accountant to the bank at Auckland. } x? c was Pronioted to be manager .atNew Plymouth, ana in November, 1900, no acted as chief inspector at head office, Wellington. From 1906 to 1919 he was manager for the bank at Auckland,' and he was appointed general manager in 1919. He did not however, take over the duties attaching to that office nntil Ist February l»B0." Sir Henry completed fifty years
of service with the bank on *15tb December last. He is recognised in banking circles as one of the leading bankers | in the British Empire, even as the bank "itself, with a capital and reserve fund . exceeding ten and a half millions ster ling, occupies a leading place among the banks of the British Dominions. Since he joined the Bank of New Zealand, Sir Henry has se>en it develop its activities and influence not only in New Zealand Iput in the Common wealth of Australia and Fiji. In 1878, the capital and reserves of the bank were £1,058,888; to-day ' there are £10,503,723 During the war period Lady Buckleton took a, leading part in war relief work and was awarded the 0.8.R for her services. She has for some years past been president of the Wellington branch of the Victoria League.
