HOCKEY

A HIGH STANDARD

rAST -SEASON BEVIBWBD

Ike report of the Wellington Hockey Association to be presented at the annual meeting on Tuesday next, states that the past season -was a very satisfactory one in every way. The conduct of players was excellent throughout the season, and only one case of a player being reported by a reioreo came before the Management Committee. The work of the referees iv Helping to achieve such a position is commended. The standard of play was particularly high, and play in the competition mutches was always worthy of the association, which had the honour to achieve and retain championship honours for 1028. In spiio of heavy representative commitments, the club competitions were sustained in a fine manner, and five-a-side competitions also met with good support and proved an interesting variation of the ordinary Saturday programme. The various competitions were won as follow bomor_ A, University; senior B, University; junior, Karori; third, Hutt; intermediate, Technical A. All the competitions were keenly contested, and in no ?,?, so , d tllo Naders let up on their play. iho club championship waa won by University. .Reference is made in the report to the epic contest" with Auckland for the Now Zealand Challenge Shield, which was won by Wellington, and to the various representative matches, of which five were won, three were drawn, and one was lost. Poverty Bay's challenge for the shield was unsuccessful, the local team winning by 4 goals to 2. .

All the grounds leased by the association were in their usual excellent condition, but there was still the problem o£ a shortage of playing areas, and the executive was hard put to it to allocate grounds for matches. Dressing-room accommodation on some of the grounds was also a problem, but this, it is felt, will soon be improved. Despite the heavy expenses for the entertainment of visiting teams, the year's working reveals a profit of £5 7s lOd. Last year the loss on the year's working was £13 14s 7d, but this was due to payments amounting to £53 4s for school hockey, though set off by a realisation of. capital to the extent of £27 10s.

Particular, mention is made of the work of Mr. H. Hatch as sole senior selector.
