Main, streets in the heart of Wellington are fast changing in appearance- and tho city is almost entirely rebuilt in the area bounded by Lanibton quay; and tho waterfront, by Manners street and the railway terminus, and all within the past ten or fifteen years. Another great rebuilding ■ scheme is about to be launched in which a very familiar landmark, the Exchange Building, will disappear from Lambton quay.
Metropole, Ltd., has been registered with a capital of £125,000 in shares of £1 each. The objects of the company are given as "To purchase, take on lease, or hi exchange, hire or otherwise acquire and deal with any real or personal property, and general incidental." . The company will presently approach the public with a proposal to take up shares in Metropole, Ltd., the trustees of which have acquired the Exchange Building"'and'the property of the Wellington Publishing. Company. The properties mentioned front Lambton quay and extend back to Boulcott street, and are bounded on the south by Plimmer's steps, a wellused short cut from Tho Terrace into the city. ' The company will build and reconstruct in order to provide a fine shopping arcade, row of shops modern in: every 'respect; nearly a hundred self-contained - residential and service flats; and a high-class hotel. It is understood that steps, will .be taken to transfer ■ the • license of the Central Hotel opposite to the proposed, new hotel.. ■ . . - , .
The subscribers to the company are Messrs. C. A. Natusch (architects), D. F. M'Arthur, A. W. L. Gibson, J. A. Bedpath, H. F. Johnston, T. W. E. Devrcll, and B. Natusch (Napier).
