The gross ex« penditure of London local authorities amounts to over £56,000,000 annually. In the great populous area open spaces maintained by the authorities amount to 48 square miles, tho County Council maintaining 977 schools. Children unfit for receiving instruction at ordinary! elementary schools arc' educated ft* others specially provided to cope with! their mental or physical disabilities* Tho council maintains 26 secondary! schools and 19 technical schools, and makes substantial grants-in-aid to 52 other secondary schools, 10 polytech* nies, and 16 technical institutes.
