NEW HUTT BRIDGE
TO BE OPENED ON THURSDAY
The engineer of the Lower Hutt reported to tbe Borough Council last evening that considerable difficulty had been experienced by the contractor in the metalling of the approaches to the new Hutt Bridge, the output from the various quarries being seriously reduced, that at Belmont due to water shortage, Waiwetu to a breakdown, and the Horokiwi to a slip. Metal was now coming in in unsatisfactory quantities, but it was difficult to take further action than had been done. It was hoped that the metal might be supplied and, at least partially consolidated before the 14th March.
The Mayor (Mr. W. T. .Strand) reported that the bridge would be opened by the Prime Minister on Thursday afternoon. Sir Joseph Ward would be accompanied by other Ministers of the Crown. • Arrangements had been made for an enclosure to be roped off at the western end and seats provided for,the invited guests. After the ceremony the only car allowed over the bridge would be the Prime Minister's. The party would then proceed to the Town. Hall, whore the visitors would be welcomed and a reply be made on behalf of other local bodies by the Mayor'of Wellington. Cars would bo parked at tho eastern end of the bridge clear of the approach. __ School .children would be given an opportunity to be present* and the High School I&J$ would line- the approach.
