NO HOSING

EXCEPT THROUGH METER

.PETONE COUNCIL'S DECISION

The recent fire in Eiddler's crescent, Petono, in which two houses were destroyed, was discussed at the meeting of the Petpne Borough Council last night.

Tho Mayor (Mr. D. M'Kenzie) said that he thought the motion giving the right to an hour's hosing every night should be rescinded.

Conricillof V. E. Jacobson moved accordingly. •

Councillor J. Cumming seconded the motion, which was carried.

Councillor Jacobson suggested that a telephone bo installed in the turncock's house, so that in case of lire he could be notified, and could, by cutting off the water elsewhere, concentrate presBure on the area where the fire was.

The borough engineer said that such a system was, to some extent, alroady in use.

. The matter was left to bp dealt with Ly the engineer.

Councillor D. M'Carthy said that the council's bylaw , definitely stated that there was to be no hosing unless through a met&v, and that the motions permitting kvsing bj anyone nad been contrary to the bylaw. He thought that the bylaw should be adhered to.

The position is, therefore, that there is to be no hosing except through a meter.

Later in the evening, the council decided, on tho motion of Councillor Jacobsdn, to send a letter of appreciation and thanks to the brigade for its services at the fire, the brigado having done its .best in very trying circumstances. '
