CANCER CAMPAIGN
TO-NIGHT'S PUBLIC MEETING
Arrangements have been completed for the public meeting to be held in the Concert Chamber, Town Hall, to-night, to form a New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign. Addresses will be delivered by the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward), Mr. Sampson Handley (Senior Surgeon, Middlesex Hospital^ and a noted authority on cancer), Dr. J. S. Elliott (president of the New Zealand branch of the 8.M.A.), the Hon. Dr, AY. E. Collins, M.L.C., Dr. W. B. Herbert, Mr. T. A. Hunter, and Mr. P. Fraser, M.P.
Resolutions will be moved providing that a New Zealand branch of the campaign bo established and incorporated with headquarters in AVellington, and that local divisions be established throughout New Zealand; that a central general committee be established, and that a ' number of prominent citizens (whose names will be submitted) be invited to bo members of the commit-, tee; also, that trustees be appointed to act pending incorporation of the association., ■•■'■.■
The British Empire Cancer Campaign which was established in 1923, has its headquarters in London, and includes under the presidency a controlling council, containing representatives of the different cancer hospitals and research laboratories, a scientific committee partly appointed by the Governmental Departments of Health and Medical Research, The central body has taken steps in connection with the education of the public .in the early signs of cancer by lectures and literature; and a monthly'journal is issued for the assistance of' research workers. The- movement is helped by the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, which is under the joint management of- the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons. . The patron of the British Empire Cancer Campaign is His. Majesty the Kiiig, and the president is H.R.H. the Duke of York. The Grand Council is composed of seventy of the leading public and medical men 'of Great Britain, the Marquis of Reading being chairman and Lord Dawson of Perm and Sir John Bland-Sutton, Past President of the Royal College of Surgeons, vice-chairmen.
