AT BULLS
MANLY SURPRISES
DOBBIN WINS WELL
(By Telegraph from "Vedette. 1)
Rather' better weather prevailed for the conclusion of the Rangitikei Meeting yesterday, the attendance being just fan- and not up to first clay standard. 'Die course was in Bimilar condition to that ot the first day, not sutficXnt rain having fallen to affect it. The totnlisntor turnover was £11,804', compared with £11,800 last year, making the total £25.385 for the meeting. Manly scored rather a surprise win in the .principal event, the field a fair one. He .was capably handled by S. Webster. Dobbin, well ridden by another lightweight, the'promising K. Voitre, stuck on well in the sprint event beating auother lightweight in Naston, who had none of the luck of the race. SANSON HACK HURDLES. Airtight was favourite, but there was plenty of support for Hymestrasoi). KaUutu led to the first fence, but jumped badly, and continued to lose ground, uymestrason led with a mile to go just ahead o£ Airtight and .Novar, Airtight went up to Hymestrason at the five-furlong post, but Hymestvasnii jumped best. Airtight was not nble to get on terms with Hymestrason, who ran out at the last'fence, interfering a little with Airticht Hvmestrason came on and wou by a length and a half, with Novar two lengths away. Rangiuti- was a furlong Hym'estrason jumped really well, except at the last fence, and this won the race lor him. Airtight did not go so well as on the first day, and 12.5 settled Novar. MAIDEN HANDICAP. Snowshoo was backed down to a short price, with Nasselle, Orattau and Lady Lucerne also well supported. Lady Lucerne led out of the barrier from bnowshoo, Some Acre, Grattan, and '.tenure, -with Kali last. Lady Lucerne was clear at the half-mile from Snowshoe, 1 enure, Kali, Grattan, and Nasselle. Kali led into ■ t'ho straight from Lady Lucerne, fenow\'tih(so,- Gratton, and ■Nasselle. Snowshoe and'Nasselle came away over the last bit, Nasselle failing by a head to beat Snowshoc. Grattan was two, lengths away third, with Kali, Lady L-iremo, and Some Aero next. : :" ;,. ' „.' .'" Sn<?\vshoe was lucky to win, for Nasselle tfvisseii ■•the' jump-out and struck a good (feat/, of trouble thereafter, but for which she would have won. Snowshoe, on the contrary, was always well placed. Grattan ran another useful race, and Kali did well after her bad start. Lady Lucerne again failed to stay. FRASER MEMORIAL HANDICAP. Moutoa Treasury, Hipo, and Discourse were all fairly solidly backed, with good support for ■'"Imperial Spark. Hipo and Lucy Hose led down the straight from Moutoa Treasury, Orazone, Manly, and Imperial Spark. Lucy Rose showed the way to Hipo six furlongs from home, ■with Orazone and Imperial Spark next, and Moutoa Treasury and Manly both moving; up. At the half-mile Lucy Rose led Orazone, Manly,- Hipo, and Moutoa Treasury. ' Manly and Lucy Rose turned into the straight in the lead from Moutoa Treasury, Orazone, and Imperial Spark. Manly held oft' Orazone, who challenged, in the run in, by a good head. Lucy Rose was a length away third, and then right up in line came Imperial Spark, Discourse, Hipo, and Moutoa Treasury. • ,-; .jilanly looked very bright, and in the '•■race-was .always going well. An advan'tago -he;gained three furlongs from home: stood to him well when Orazone made her effort. Sho ran a puzzling race, losing her ~ <rplaco "in' the middle stages: Lucy Rose showed up well enough to be remembered for a minor event soon. Imperial Spark was not able to get within striking position, and Hipo did not show the expected dash. Moutoa Treasury again failed rather badly, and apparently the distance was beyond her. NGAIO HACK HANDICAP. Backers, were undecided, Warfille and Vinella being'the actual favourites,. but several others, were supported. Elysianor showed out first from Volplane, Warfille, Merxcis, Vinella, Warfille, and Patearoa. lilysianor was out clear racing round to the half-mile from Warflame, Volplane, - Merxcis, Vinella, Warfille, and .Acred. Skyrider moved up smartly going to the turn, where Elysianor still showed the way to Warflame and Warfille. Warflame wore down Elysianor over tlie last furlong, and beat him home by a head. Heads then divided Warfille and Vinella, with Patearoa, Volplane, and Acred next. Warflame, ridden a good race in behind Elysianor, was just a shade too good at the weights. Elysianor registered an attractive performance, for he made all his own running ,with 9.8, and only just failed Warhlle raced again solidly, but unluckily hhe is staying on better now. Vinella and .latearoa were both a little unlucky, especially Patearoa, who was buffeted about - in the middle stages. Sbjrider failed to run-on, and Volplane and Acred shaped moderately. ' BAILEY HANDICAP. Limited was always a sound first choico with Vast Acre and Dobbin also solidly supported. Vast Acre and Limited led . Dobbin and Whenuanui to the turn, where JNaslon had ranged up handy to the lastnamed pair. Limited was beaten a furlong from home, and Vast Acre also compounded and Dobbin and Nastori went past them, Dobbin boating Nastori home by a head. Limited was two lengths away third, with Vast Acre and Whenuanui right up. ■Dobbin stayed on too well for the pacemakers, Vast Acre and Limited, who ran themselves' out. With a little more luck at the turn-, Nastori might easily have beaten Dobbin. Whenuanui was not really a possibility at any stage. RANGITOTO HACK HANDICAP. Mister Gamp and Thrift between them carried nearly half the total amount invested. Balloon led out of the straight from Royal Black, Thrift, and Kilburn. ICilburn was in charge at the six-furlong post and led right round to the turn, with Thrift and .Balloon as his nearest attendants and Mister Gamp moving up round his field. Balloon was cut back just as the straight was reached, and Kilburn turned for home just ahead of Thrift, Mister Gamp, and Royal Black. Thrift beat Kilburn home by half a length, with Balloon a length back third. Royal, Black, Acred, and Mister Gamp were next. Thrift was improved by her race on the first day, and much the same applied to Kilburn. Thrift had the last run on Kilburn, who was the pacemaker practically all the way, and possibly this was the deciding'factor. Balloon, did well to reach third place, for he met with a decided check about a furlong and a half from
home. Koyal Black ran another fair race, and .might soon pick up a minor event. Mister Gamp was not suited by the course, and Acred was, having his second rii.ee' for the day. KILLEYMOON HANDICAP. Glcustar, with H. Goldfinch up and l'/slb overweight, was backed as if the race was all over; Matti, Vigilance, Borsalene, and Glenstar were the smartest away and Glenstar led down the back from .Vigilance and Borsalene, who were followed by Maui, Callamnore, and Gold Cure. Glenstar was still in front at the half-mile from Vigilance, Maui, Borsalene, and Gold Cure. Glenstar, Borsalene, and Gold Cure just led Maui as they lined up for home, and Glenstar came away over the last furlong to win by two lengths from Gold Cure, who beat Borsalene by half v length. Maui was fourth, and then came Callamnore and Discourse. Glenstar was just as good as his price indicated; and he won well, but ridden right out. Gold Cure appeared to have an interrupted run and finished well. Borsalene ran a good race, but was not smart enough on the day. Maui just failed. Callanmore and Discourse were always in the rear. ■ 1 ' FAREWELL HACK HANDICAP. Flying Binge and Bank Note were the favourites in a good betting race. Inflame began best from Bank Note, Wyeford, Second Thought, and White Kinglet. Flying Binge had run up handy at the turn. Inflame came on to beat Bank Note by; a length and a half, with 1 Second Thought two and n half lengths away third. Marica was fourth, and Flying Binge, White Kinglet,'and Wyeford were next. Inflame with the rails position was always going best, and Bank Note had no chance with him in the run home. Second Thought might have done better with a clear run. for he was checked about two furlongs from home. Marica finished on after beginning slowly, and Flying Binge also lost her chance at the barrier. Results:— Sanson Hack Hurdles, or 125 sors; one mile and a half.—2 Hymestrason, 10.0 (C.
