DRESSING FILM STARS
Miss Gordou Conway is the lady win has been appointed to guide the fashions for British film stars. Ciiioma patrons who have had occasion to criticise tho dresses of British film actresses will have no' further cause for complaint, for Mr. Graham Cutts has determined that this reproach shall not be levelled against his casts. The delay between .picture making and public presentation is. sometimes a long one, and Miss Conway will have to use ingenuity in covering up this period 30 as to bring tho dresses up to date. "When I have a picture to costume," she told an interviower, "I first read tho script and then design clothes that will help to portray the characters, not to suit the whims and fancies of tho star. Lighting and colour values are given duo consideration, and I must always consult the art director. I must know what the backgrounds are if my dresses will blend. One never ceases learning; every day I have to correct myself. I hope to see every studio with its own designer and dressmaking staff, as they have at, Hollywood. I will say this; That when I have designed a frock and want it made, as soon as I mention that it is for film purposes, every dressmaker at once puts up the price to two or three times its real value. It would pay studios to make their dresses and keep a stock and alter and use again."
