GAS FOR SUBURBS
MAKARA AND JOHNSONVILLE
SUPPLY TURNED ON TO-DAY
The. gas supply, for Johnsonville and Makara was turned ou at Johusonville this afternoon by Sir Harold Beauchamp (chairman of tho board?; of ■directors of tho Wellington-., Gas,- -; Company).. < '^w Gas Company.; has. • already reticulated Nguio. and Khaudallah, -uud is now supplying .Johusquyille and Makara.
Tho cercuTOJiy.' ,was, • performed ; -at Moore's Hall, Johnsonville; Referring briefly to the steps which led up to the event, Sir Harold Beauehauip said that only a few nlonths ago, at the'request of tho Johnsonvijle Town Board and the Makara ■ County Council, Parliament passed a measure which gave tho Wellington Gas. Company'authority to supply gas in these" districts. . The length of the pip© line from tho Miramar works to Johnsonville was 14 miles. Pipes were immediately ordered by cable, and no time.: was lost.in making the gas available. The provision of the many conveniences of • a gas. supply marked an important advance in tho history of these, rapidly-growing districts. : ■•■■:' 66 MILES OF MAINS IN 4 YEARS. .."Our policy, has always been to provide gas as soon; as pbssible in outlying localities, and during tho last four years we have laid 66 miles of mains," said the speaker. "Although it: will probably be some years before a return will be-received ou. tho heavy capital i expenditure that-lias been incurred,, we : lonic forward with 'confidence to receiviug: generous support from the. residents, and I. feel sure that the gas cooker will -be popular in these districts as soon as ; its advantages bocome known. The price of gas here and : in Makara wiirbe the same as that charged in the city.
