NEW INFANT SCHOOL WANTED

Urging that a now infant school at Mbunt Cook was long overdue, a deputation representing the school committee and residents of the district waited on the Minister of Education (the Hon. H. Atmore) last night and requested that action should be taken to improve tho accommodation,

In stating the_ case for the deputation, Mr. Simpson said that a.decisionjin .the matter had been held up for some time owing to the uncertainty surrounding the question of a site, for a Netvtown School. As it was now understood that the Newtown School was "to be built on the old .site, the necessity for the infant school at Mount Cook was, pressing. He described the present condition of the building as deplorable in the extreme; it was-unfit for school purposes. Mr. Simpson also emphasised the desirability of providing .better accommodation for tho class of' back-, ward children who were being taught in the school. The state of the grounds surrounding the new main school was bad, and Steps should be taken by the Education Board and the Department to have them put iv proper order as soon as possible. The school committee had £360 in hand, which had been raised by the residents of the district, and that money would be available as soon as required for the purpose of improving the grounds.' New accommodation was also required for tho cookery clasa. Another speaker, Mr. Burley, said ho hoped no difficulties would be put in the way of the Minister in finding money for essential educational work.

In replying, the Minister said he would consider the committee's representations. He intended to visit the school, as well as other schools in Wellington, as soph as arrangements could be made, and he would then be in a position to decide what should be done.
