GIRLS' COLLEGE
PARENTS' ASSOCIATION
Tlw Parents' Association of the Wellington Girls' College, which will hold its annuhl meeting to-night, reports that very useful work has been accomplished dm ing the past year, although those attending the college have not yet been able to enjoy the benefits of the improvements to the grounds, which will shortly be completed. A considerable area is being tilled in but owing to the difficulty in obtaining the necessary . spoil, progress has been very slow. A sufficient quantity is, however now available, and the actual levelling of the area will be completed very soon. After the ground has been thoroughly consolidated a hard surface will be put down, which will provide a va liable addition suitable for basket ball, drill, and other games. The association has contributed £130, and the school has provided £70 towards the cost of the work, making £200 to be subsidised £1 for-£l by the Education Department, or a total of £400. The board's architect has prepared a plan for additional ground improvements, which include a "fives court." With the object of proceeding with' this work and undertaking other small responsibilities, the association during the year has raised the sum of £68 8s 6d. After meeting current expenses and contributing £10 to the prize fund, a balance ;of £53 14s 7d remains. This is considered a 1 satisfactory position, and i£ next year is equally successful, a.sum of £200 will be available, provided the Department continues its excellent policy of subsidising the efforts of parents—a policy which not only encourages parents to take an interest, in their institution, but effects a substantial saving to the State in carrying out necessary, and very often essential, work." The association has also taK<sn_ an interest in other matters concerning the welfare of ■ the college. Constant representations were made to the Board of Governors oa the necessityf:for installing a central heating plant, and: this work was completed early in' the winter months, and its great .benefits were enjoyed by the scholars' during the coldest part of the year. The constitution of the Board of Governors has been discussed, and a subcommittee has been appointed to confer with other interested bodies with the view, if possible, of prompting legislation to provide for a board'with a less number of nominated members and a greater number of elective members. . It is also desired to extend the franchise.so as to give both parents the right.to vote.for the parents' representatives on the board. Tho association will also make further representations.to the Minister of Education (the Hon. H. Atmore), and urge the acquisition of adjoining property in order to consolidate the college grounds, which, quite apart from the advantages to the college, should prove a very sound business proposition. A plea for increased membership concludes the report.
