NEARING THE CENTURY
One of the grand oJcJ men of Wellington is Mr. ■■William Freeman, of Brampton Bryan," Karaka Bay, who celebrated his 96th birthday last Tuesday. Mr. Freeman was born in Highgate, London, in 1833, four years before the' late Queen Victoria camo to the Throne, so, has lived through the reigns of four Sovereigns. Ho came to New Zealand ,in 1855; on the sailing ship New Era, and; he and his wife spent their honeymoon on tho water: It was a long honeymoon, for the voyage took 98 days. Mrs. Freeman died some years ago, at the age- of 94 years. Mr. Freeman, despite his great age, enjoys a walk along the seafront. He is a foundation member of tho Thorndon Bowling Club, and was at one time president of .that club. He is still keenly interested in bowls, and was present on Veterans' Day, when he threw tho first jack and bowl.' i Ho is a great leader, and is well up in all the latest news, happily being able to read without the aid of spectacles.; On Tuesday he received many congratulatory telegrams, letters, etc., from, relatives and friends. He also entertained a big party of friends at his home, and during the evening tho guests set light to the 96 candles on the birthday cake.
