DAMAGES CLAIMED

ACCIDENT ON STEAMER.

A claim for £20(3 damages was made before Mr. Justico Ostler in tho Supremo Court to-day. Tho plaintiff was Thomas Owens, a watorsido worker, and the defendant was tho Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co., Ltd. Tho claim was mado in respect of injuries received by tho plaintiff while employed fy the company on tho steamer Coptic in September last. He allegod that the accident had been caused by negligence on the part of the company in failing to protect him from danger from falling hatches. Tho defonco was that the hatches which injured tho plaintiff had been placod in position by a follow-employoo to protect himself from tho wind, and that, in thoso circumstances, tho company was not liable for any resulting damage. Mr. O. C. Mazorgarb appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. H. F. O'Lcary for tbc company.
