A Townsvillc message states that, while bathing in four feet of water at | Arcadia Bay, Henry Wetherell, aged 20, son of the manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, was attacked by a huge shark. Wetherell was bathing further out than the others when the monster appeared and tore off an arm. A dozen bathers dashed to the rescue, but he waved them back, shouting, "One is enough for it to get."
N Then ensued :i desperate struggle, during which the shark tore off the other hand, and inflicted other hideous injuries.
WethercJl eventually , managed to reach tlio shore, where a nurse helped to staunch the frightful bleeding. He was raced in a pilot ship to Townsvillc Hospital, three miles away. He suffered inexpressible agony without a complaint for an hour, till an operation was performed. His parents failed to rcacli the bedside before the youth lapsed into unconsciousness, which ended in death.
This is the first tragedy of its kind known at Towusville, where thousands bathe all tho year in what are known to bo shark-infested waters.
