"UNUSUAL CASE"
In connection with the report which appeared in' yesterday's paper of the ease in which Ralph John Garrctt, aged 19, was sentenced by Mr. Justice MacGregor to two years' reformative detention for rape at Tailiape, the following remark by Mr. Justice MacOrcgor on Friday was included in the introductory paragraph: i ".It seeina to me that if he 'had pleaded not guilty, and had been properly defended, he would have got oft." It is pointed out that G.-uTclt was not defended by counsel when lie appeared and pleaded guilty in the Lower Court at Taihupe, ' and that Mr. AY. Berry was only engaged to appear for him when he was brought- before the iSiipieine Court for sentence!.
