Candidates mvs r t ,be university w,omen and must either be unmarried or widows.'' Among the Government Departments which employ specially qualified women officers of the "professional" type are .the Ministry of' Agriculture, yictoria and Albert Museum, Department of Scientific and In^ustrjial Keseareh, Civil S.er.yice .Comrniss.ion, Scottish Education Department and^Ppard.of health, Welsh Board of Health, foreign Office, Ministry of Health,- and Home Office. These women ar,e holding appointments as doctors, .librarians, research works, and museum assistants. Their scales of salary frequently reach a very high maximum. Sometimes vacancies are filled merely by interview before a selection board, with ,or without a written qualifying examinationj at other times by means of an ipen competitive examination. Candidates should possess a university degree or its equivalent in medicine, science, art, or law.
