, Mr. Werner' Laurie'announces "Boston," a contemporary historical novel, by Mr. XTpton Sinclair. . "A Bibliography of the Works of John < Galsworthy" has been prepared by Mr. 11. V. Marrot. Sir Ernest Benn has ■ arranged to publish the reminiscences of Mr. T. P. O 'Connor, who gives them ■the simple title, "My Memoirs." • "Ralph Connor," the Canadian novelist, has written a romance around the historical associations of Niagara, and it is being published by Hodder and Sto.ughton.with the title "The Niagara Runner." Professor George Macaulay . Treve- j lyan has written an introduction for a new edition of the "Lays of Ancient Rome," which will come presently from Longmans. This volume will include a newly-discovered poem of Maeaulay's on "Bosworth Field" and an early draft of '' The Armada." tory of Europe. The work contains some caustic but not unfriendly sketches of leading personalities, such as Lord Balfour, Mr. Lloyd George, M. Briand, Dr. Stresemann, and Lord Curzon Lord D'Abernon was in New Zealand as chairman of the Dominion Royal Commission. He had not then been raised to the peerage. Sir John Fortescuc, who is the dean of English military historians, has appearing with Cassell an historical survey of the Empire, cast in the form of a history of the Army, and ■ with the title "The Empire and the Army." Sir George Milne, the Chief of the Imperial General Staff, is contributing an introduction to the book. It traces in simple language the descent of the English fighting man from Norman times to our own time. It deals at some length with our first Regular Army, "The New Model" army, which was a product of. Cromwell's time. Two volumes now publish d will interest students of Italian history: "Francesco Crispi," by G. Volpe (Nuova Italia, publishers) is not a true study, but- rather ;a long article on this much-talked-about Italian politician. Studies of Crispi are many 'and excellent. Volpe has desired'to contribute with the earnestness and solidarity characteristic of the man who is considered the best Italian historian. The second volume is by A. Monti—a large book on Pope Pius IX., revealing the importance of his politica attitude in con neetion with the Italian Risorgimento (Laterza, publishers). His work contains some rare and unpublished documents. Beatrice Cerici is always a historical figure which never fails to excite the curiosity of historians and the phantasy of poets and authors with the mysterious circumstances of her life and death. How much has been written about this woman -who —according to the author's point of view—was either perfidious or saintly! Who seeks- to sec another point of view to tho story may-add to his library the work of 0. Montovcsi ("Beatrice Cenci" with 3/ illustrations. Optima, publishers), wherein the author guarantees to have got his material from heretofore unpublished sources with a ; purely historical. criterion.
