Wnirarapa and Manawhemia for the Ranfurly Shield promised well at the start, but Wairaraim were much too strong, dominating the ,pluy for three-quarters of Lite game. In "the first half Wairarapa made the paw hot. From a loose scrum following a lineout. J- Donald picked up, hud scored'in a handy position. Cundy missed the goal. Immediately afterwards Parker lielded smartly and ran in at the corner, Cundy missing the goal, Horowhcnua put iv a
spurt, but Wairarapa drove them back, and from a line-out in the visitors' twentyfive Jury snapped up and crossed at the corner. Cundy failed to convert. Wairarapa 9, Manawhenua 0. A shower of ram now fell, but did not affect the handling of the ball. Manawhemia were kept on the defensive. Jury received from Hart, burst through . io forwards, and transtcrred to J. Donald, who forced his way across. Cuudy goaled. Two minutes Inter from a line-out in the centre of the field Hart sent Cundy away. The latter, instead of passing to Cooke, brilliantly cut in and scored in a good position. Ho missed the goal. Wairarapa 17, Manawhenua 0. J. Donald cut in nicely, but was held up under the goal. Strange secured, and punted up-field. Roach fielded, and landed a splendid pot. ■ in the second half Wairarapa made the game very open, and had Manawhenua bewildered. Free kicks gave the visitors relief, and from one Taylor had a shot at goal, but failed. Manawhenua kept up the pressure, and Hart miskickea from under the goal to the corner. Tatana secured and scored in the corner. He failed with the kick. Returning to the attack Wairarapa had the visitors in difficulties. Near half Hart sent Cundy away. The latter passed to Cooke, who short-punted over Roberts's head. Yates race up, secured, and passed to Stringfellow, who scored a pretty try under the posts. Cundy goaled. Wairarapa 26, Manawhenua 3. Maanwhenua looked dangerous, but M'Gregor broke through with the ball. He passed to Parker, who sent on to Hart. The latter transferred back to Parker, who ran in near the posts. Cundy goaled. Wairarapa 31, Manawhenua 3. With five minutes to go 'Wairarapa slackened, and Manawhemia quickly worked an opening. A passing bout was started, and Gleeson, with a clear run in, elected to "pot." His attempt succeeded. Wairarapa 31. Manawhenua 7. Continuing their efforts the visitors pushed WairarapA back to the corner peg, where Galpin scooped up and scored the final try just on the call of time. Akuira failed to goal.' The game ended: Wairarapa 31, Manawhenua 10. Mr. J. King was the referee.
