• POLICE OFFICER RETIRES " After having been thirty-throe years in the Police Force,1 Senior-Sergeant Ryan, who for the past three years has been in charge of the Mount Cook station, Wellington, retired from active service to-day. Messrs. W. A. Worth .and G. Any on, J.P.s, who presided at the Mt. Cook Court this morning, made eulogistic reference to the services rendered by tho Senior-Sergeant, and thanked him on behalf of the other Justices for his kind advice at all times. They wished- him long life, health, and happiness in-his retirement. Senior-Sorgeant Eyau has had. a. varied and interesting career. He started work at'the agevof ;17 in the ,coal mines at Bridgeford,; Capo. Breton, but later the same year he, went to soa, and' the-' following years wore packed full of interest for him. At one time ho was on tho ■■'-Rbtoihahana,- the "Grey-, hound of the Pacific," and he, was.on the . Wairarapa- when she , was wrecked, at Groat Barrier'lsland: Among those who lost their lives'in the Wairarapa wreck were .the. Senior-Sergeant's- wife and mother. Subsequently,,.after having i been on the Manapouri, he was induced Ito join the Police Force..; After being stationed in Wellington five years, four of which were'spent, at the Wharf Station, he wont to Kumara for cloven years, after which ho was promoted to the rank of sergeant and transferred to Auckland. Four years in Eeofton followed, and then six years as senior sergeant at. Wcstport. At the end. of that period, hecame back to Wellington, where lie hiis been for the past three' years,
