HOCKEY SENSATION
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CIIRISTCUURCH, 13th Sept. Mr. W. 11. Down, secretary of the New Zealand Hockey Association, president of the Sclwyn Hockey Club, anil a prominent referee, will not referee any more hockey matches for the next three years if a request made by the Management Committee of the Cantorbury Hockey Association is endorsed, by the Kefcrees' Association. Mr. Down was reported to tho Management-Com-mittee at a meeting on Monday for making an insulting remark to another referee at tho five-a-side tournament at Hagley Park last Saturday, and a motion was then carried to the above effect. Mr. Davcy, a referee, reported to the committee that he had been refereeing a game between Sydenham and Selwyn. Mr. Down did not agree with his decisions, and said to him:1 "If Sydenham collect these medals they've got you to thank for it." The management committee considered the matter, and decided: "That the Hockey Referees' Association be requested not to appoint Mr. Down to any game' under the jurisdiction of the Canterbury Hockey Association for | three years." It was mentioned at the mooting that Mr. Down had also questioned a decision of Mr. R. Gracie, re-' fcree in another match on Saturday, in ordering off a Selwyn player. As no report was supplied by the referee no action was taken in this case.
