PORIRUA RIDING
PROPOSED SUBDIVISION INTO SIX
With a view to giving more equitable treatment and more intensive attention to local requirements, the Makara County Council to-day passed a resolution to divide the present Porirua riding into six smaller ridings. In moving the motion, the chairman (Mr. E. Windlcy) recalled that a deputation to tho last meeting had urged that a re-division be made so that each locality would receive representation on the council. The division into, six which ho had mentioned would assure representation to each locality. He thought the scheme would place each riding in a more satisfactory position, for each would be responsible for its own requirements, and would have the satisfaction of providing the money for them; That would establish a local interest, which was lacking to-day. In the past tho council had supplied what they thought the different localities had needed, but there had not been any local interest, and tho council knew that people had not always been able to get what they required. Under the new scheme, which was subject, of course, to the approval of the Internal Affairs Department, there would still be eight councillors, and the change could be made at tho time of the next council election in April of next year, so that no special election would be needed. As a whole, he thought the ratepayers were, Satisfied, but with the subdivision there would probably be a great deal more satisfaction. Councillor Dunbar Sloane seconded the motion, saying he thought it was a splendid idea, and that now was the right time to make the divisions. Councillor L. C. Bryant asked what the position would be if amalgamation with the Hutt County Council was agreed to. Tho chairman said that as the scheme of division would not come into effect until April of 1929, it could bo droppod if amalgamation was agreed to in tho meantime. The motion was carried unanimously. The names proposed for the new ridings are Titahi Bay, Ohariu, Ngahauranga, Bolmont, Tawa, and Porirua. Councillors R. W. Bothaniley, M. S. G. Monk, Dunbar Sloane, and L. C. Bryant were present at the special meeting held to discuss the matter, Mr. E. Windley being in the chair.
