HOME AND SCHOOL
LYALL BAY ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the Lyall Bay Home and School Association was held on Monday evening, the president (Mrs. L. E. Bruce) presiding over .1 good attendance. Mr. H. A. Taylor reported on the arrangements made for a picture entertainment, and the very generous terms offered by the proprietor o£ the Seaside Pictures (Mr. D. Richards). It was decided to hold the entertainment next Thursday, from the proceeds of which the committee hope to complete the amount required for the purchase of a new piano foi1 the infants' school. The matter of a fancy dress bail for old scholars, and a dance for parents and residents, was held over until the next meeting. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. H. A. Taylor for donating the ladies' prizes for the next card party. The president reported on the deputation to the Minister of Education last week, and gratification was expressed that the Minister had agreed to remodel certain classrooms, and to provide an additional room. This should relieve the present congestion in the main school. It was regretted, however, that it would still be necessary to hire a hall to accommodate some of the younger children. It was left to Mr. J. C. Riddell to interview the secretary of the Old Scholars' Association (Mr. S. Perkin) and endeavour to revive its activities. Mr. H. M. Harris considered that it was the duty of the Education Department to put the school play areas in a lit state for the children's nse, instead of leaving the responsibility to the school committees to raise funds for the purpose. Mr. Harris, who is a member of the school committee, was asked to bring the matter before his committee for it to take the necessary action with the Department.
