COLLISION IN ELBE

GERMAN STEAMER RAMMED CATASTROPHE AVERTED Australian Press Association—United Service. (Received 11th September, 1 p.m.) HAMBUEG, 10th September. When the British steamer Cornwood rammed the Geruian passenger paddle steamer Koenigin Luiso in tho Elbe, near Blankenese, last evening, the electric light of tho Koenigin Luise was extinguished when tho water rushed into the engine-room. A panic ensued, and many passengers jumped overboard, but the presence of mind of the British captain prevented a catastrophe. The Cornwood'a bow rammed the German vessel amidships just behind the wheel box. The Cornwood continued to push the German boat to tho river bank so that she could not sink. Eyewitnesses say that the accident was the fault of the German captain of the Koenigin Luise, who, unable to land his passengers at tho Blankeneso Pier, continued up the river and theu . went backward. Tho Cornwood suddonly apppeared during this manoeuvro, giving warning signals, which were apparently not noticed by the German captain, who continued backward. Colli- | sion was unavoidable. Three people aro believed to have been drowned.
