RATES REDUCED
LOWER HUTT'S NEW CHANGES Speaking in connection with the rates which have just been struck in Lower Hutt, the Mayor, Mr. W. T. Strand, made the following statement last evening: "There will be some ratepayers in the borough who will be very pleased, and there are some who will be just as displeased, when they receive their rate demands. I want to make it clear that though there has not been a general revaluation of the borough there has been a levelling up, and the rates have been struck on a more equal basis. Business sites and the new eastern area have been revalued, and ratepayers in these districts will feel the effect of this in spite of the fact that the rate in the £ has been reduced. The effect will be that some will pay more and some less. The rate in the £ has been reduced by lgd, and the water rate, for water users, reduced from 2d to l^d, and to non-users from Id to %d. Though figures are not available at the moment, I have every confidence that the Lower Hutt rates compare more than favourably with other boroughs, and certainly much more than favourably with the cities. In spite of all the various activities going on in the borough, it is very pleasing to record an actual reduction." _^_^^___^__
