UNSETTLED WEATHER

.+ • DISTURBED CONDITIONS Yesterday the weather rapidly became finer, the south-westerly winds decreasing in force. The barometer rose in tho north, but in the south it started to fall again, and there is now a general falling tendency, readings being very low in the south. During last night, especially to the south of Capo Egmont, districts with a westerly aspect experienced an increase in cloud, the weather becoming thick and showery on the West Coast of the South Island. Arthur's Pass reports having had 186 points of rain, snow falling there this morning. A depression is advancing ■ rapidly across the Tasman Sea, hence the renewal of unsettled weather. Strong northerly winds are likely to reach gale force at times, especially in places in and south of Cook Strait, subsequently backing to westerlies and southwesterlies. Unsettled and showery weather is likely to be experienced in districts with a westerly aspect south of Cape Egmont, although elsewhere it will be mainly fair at present with milder temperatures in eastern districts.
