A GOOD START
——♦ • THRIFT AT FLOCK HOUSE (Special to "The Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., 10th Sept. During his visit' to Flock House on Sat« urday morning, the Hon. Edward Newman, chairman of the Board of Trustees of that institution, took the opportunity of correcting a misleading statement which had recently been made in the Legislative Council with regard to the future prospects of boys leaving the homestead. It had been stated, said Mr. Newman, that boys leaving Flock House would each be given £400 on going out to work. Tho object of the fund was that every trainee should have the opportunity of owuing a section of land, free of debt if it was possible. But the policy of the trustees would be only to help those boys who would help themselves. Thei-e was no intention on the part of the board to assist those who had not worked or endeavoured to better themselves. What was really intended was that boys who had worked well and saved should be given the opportunity to acquire a piece of leasehold land. In the case of a trainee who had been indented for three years, had worked two more outside, and had received a good character from his employers and from the principal of Flock House, the trustees would be glad to assist him to purchase land of his own. If he had saved £250 the trustees would be prepared to subsidise it to the extent of £150 in-order to make up the £400. This applied only to those boys who had worked and saved money; the board did not intend to finance those who did not help themselves. Their security would be the character of the boys. This policy would have the effect of encouraging thrift aiid hard work. At present, when a trainee was indented, two-thirds of his wages were retained by the trustees and invested for the boy. The fact that the boya took advantage of these facilities to save their money was instanced by one example ot a trainee who had saved £175 in the short time he had been indented. Indeed, boys who had gone to employment from Flock House had already 6aved the large sum Of 13.0(10.
