WELLINGTONIAN'S INVENTION
A cable message from London, received this week, stated that Mr. John Maxwell, chairman of British Interna^ tional Pictures, Ltd., haa acquired an interestin Rod's Patent, Ltd., New Zealand, a new process for the reproduction of souua, and is forming a company with European capital of £250,00<J to purchase the European.rights. : The.iinvontion referred to is the result of several years' work by Mr. A. E. Bod, a yotfng resident of Day's Bay, in an endeavour to produce a thoroughly satisfactory sound-reproducer. At the time his investigations began there were no really good loud-speaking devices, either for radio or gramophone purposes. In recnt years, however, the result'of persistent experiment and scientific research has been the production of remarkably effective instruments. Mr. Eod's invention, judged by a demonstration witnessed by the writer, can take its place with tho best of them, and ia remarkable for its simplicity and adaptability. Its central feature is tho uso of a perfectly free flexiblo vibrating surface. Almost all existing speakers havo the sound-produc-ing surface or,diaphragm made of high rigidity,, though it may be fixed or free. Mr. Rod uses a largo sheet of a special grade of paper, cut in a shape something like that of the face of a laundry iron. It is supported by tho straight edge, ail*hangs below th« support. Tho point is carried forward till the sheet hangs in a curve—about a quarter of a circle; and the extreme point is fixed to tho1 driving unit, which may be of any suitable design. The drive is in the direction of the surface of the papor at the point; that is, it is.tangential. The sound reproduction, though the demonstration instrument had a very poor driving unit, was natural and powerful, and gave remarkably good reproduction of the lower.notes, which are the stumbling'block of most reproducers. Mr. Eodis'to be congratulated upon tho evidence of his success at Homo. . ''. '-
