ROWING
STAR BOATING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Star Boating Club was held in the clubhoiuo last evening, the president, Sir Francis Bell, occupying the chair. ■ In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Sir Francis Bell congratulated the club on its successful season. The club had "turned the corner," he said, as' far as rowing was concerned, and its status had improved among the other rowing clubs in New Zealand. In regard to the matter of the club's premises, he said that the Mayor had been to him once or twice, and he (Sir Francis Bell) was not very happy about it. He thought, however, that the club had won and was holding the sympathy and goodwill of all people, the civic authorities included. The neighbouring club, Wellington, had also earned sympathy. The combined weight of the clubs should enable the oarsmen to get something fairly good. The club had moved twice in his time, and he did not want to see another move. Rowing had held its own against cricket, as a summer sport, and it had been able to hold ita own against golf. Rowing was one of the finest sports possible. Mr. A. 1). Bayfeild seconded the. adoption' of the report, and said that the club's improved showing at regattas during the past season had been favourably commented on throughout New Zealand. Rowing, Mr. Bayfeild declared, was coming to be recognised as a leading sport, and one which led to representation overseas. The New Zealand Rowing Association had received three invitations for the coming season; invitations to send a four to the Melbourne Henley; an eight to New South Wales in December; and an eight, four, and as many crews as risible to West Australia in May next. That showed that New Zealand rowing was being recognised. The report and balance-Bheet were adopted. ' The election of officers resulted: President, Sir Francis Bell; vice-president, Mr. A D. Bayfeild; captain, Mr. E. Diehl; deputy-captain, Mr. H. H. M'Lean; secretary, Mr. D. G. Gray; treasurer, Mr. L. Shotlander; club race committee, Messrs. L Shotlander, J. F. Taylor M. L. 6.
