Sir Brie Geddes, Chairman of the Imperial Airways, who yesterday, with other directors and"'friends, made a trial trip from Southampton to the. Channel Islands and back in one of the new Calcutta flying boats, wjiich is to be used on tho Empire air line to India, stated, that within eighteen months Southampton would become one of the j most important air ports in' the world, and would probably bo the starting place of a great Empire air service. 'She expected air service .to India will start next April.1 " '<■. Tho Imperial Airways consider tho all-metal Singapore type tho best flying boat yefc developod, cither in this or any other country. ' It is intended to run an air service with these craft across tho Mediterranean to join up with the existing Cairo-Basra service. Following this the service will bo extended to India,- thereby.-fulfilling the scheme recently outlined oin tho Houso. of Commons by Sir Saniuel Hoare, Air Minister.
