EMPIRE TRADE
WAYS OF DEVELOPMENT SUGGESTIONS IN CANADA DOMINION DELEGATES United Preps Association —By Electric Telo-Graph--Copyright. Australian Pi-csa Association—United Service. (Received 31st August, 1 p.m.) OTTAWA, 30th August. • Ways and means of developing trade within the Empire wore considered on Thursday by the Empire Pariamentiiry Association, which met iv the Senate Chamber under the presidency of Mr. Rodolpho Lomioux, Si>eaker of the House of Commons. Mr. Thomas Johnston, M.P. (London), describing the work of the Empire Marketing Board in research and publicity, incidentally mentioned that Canadian scientists with their researches into posts, had restored declining Fiji Island trade. "We breed parasites on parasites and then send them to the- Dominions to destroy their parasites." Ho believed that steps to assist actively the marketing of Empire produce when it arrived should bo undertaken. Ho suggested that instructions should be given that establishments receiving public assistance should give preference to Empire produce in making their contracts. Tho Canadian Minister of Commerce, Mr. James Malcolm, advocated two ways to stimulate Emjjiro trade;'first, publicity for the merchandise) they wanted to soil; second, aggressive salesmanship with good representatives mall countries of the Empire. He declared that he didn't think the Marketing Board and the British taxpayer should carry the whole load of publicity for all the Dominions. He said that the Marketing Board was worthy of both sentimental and financial support. Senator Thompson (Australia) said he believed that inquiries might be carried in two directions into the cost of sea transportation and tho improvement of cotton picking machinery. Mr. W. Jordan (New 'Zealand) urged co-operation all way through from producer to consumer. He mentioned that New Zealand producers of honey and other commodities discovered that there was too much intervention iv London between themselves and the ultimate consumer. Ho regretted the lack of uniformity as between the different parts of tho Enipiro in old age pension laws. Tho provision in certain, parts of tho Enipiro requiring a rosidenco of tweutyfive years worked unfairly.
