A MISSING TRAIN

DEPARTMENT EXPLAINS In Wednesday's "Post" was'published a letter signed by ''Wouldßa Punctual." the. writer advocating that tue Railway Department would bo better advised to cut out the.8.16 a.m. from Waterloo to Lambton rather than the 755 a.m., the correspondent complaining that the latter train' did not get him and many others into town m time for the usual beginning of the day s work. ■ ■ .-, j' ' When the washouts, oeeurved on tiio Hutt line, necessitating. traffic. on ono (set of rails only, Wia Popartpiont found it imperative to .cutout some trams in order to maintain a regular sei-vicc, It was found to be impossible with only I a single lino in operation between Pe* ! tone ana Ngalvauranga to run both the I T. 55 and 8.16 trains from Waterloo. Due I consideration was therefore given to ! th/ patronage accorded in the past to i each of these trains, and as the latter has alyays carried many more passengers than the former, it ■was deciSed that the 8.16 train was the one which should be retained. It was also; considered that fewer people would be m-, convonieneed by arriving .20 minutes j later in town in the mornings than i| others were made to start 2Q minutes oarlier than usual from their homes to catch the 7.55' train. ! The Department points out that, even if the 7.55 train was restored, under the conditions at present prevailing, it would bo held up at Petone, as there arc more important, trains from the main Hutt.line to be put through at that hour of tlio day, so 'that little if anything ,would-bp gainod in.the saving of,time.' Referring to tio specific instance' quoted by the correspondent as to undue delay at Potone, it is pointed out that this was. occasioned by necessary engine adjustment, and was a delay -which is not expected to rocur.
