RED CROSS WORK
(To tho Editor.) Sir,—ln your issue this evening is a special telegram from Christchurch with reference to the failure of tho St. John Ambulance Association ;in organising classes in first aid at the Canterbury Centre, which is attributed to bard times and jazz. This excuse will not stand investigation, as the work of St. John is expanding at the other New Zealand centres more rapidly than ever. The fact is that the committee at Christchurch has been tacitly encouraging the formation of ambulance classes both for St. John and its Red Cross Auxiliary. Red Cross qp^ erations were launched by St. John as its Red Cross branch in New Zealand, but a disaffected coterie broke away and started in opposition, so that we have the ludicrous spectacle of an organisation competing ■with itself in the Cathedral City. If the officers of St. John at Christchurch, who have been directing operations for some time past, are unable to successfully carry out their duties, perhaps it would be .for the benefit of the association if the Christchurch Committee gracefully resigned en masse and afforded an opportunity for capable organisers and zealous workers to bring about a more satisfactory condition of affairs. —I am, etc., , W. B. FISHER, Hon. Secretary, Dominion Executive of St. John. 30th August.
