SMOKE CONCERT
A smoke concert given by tho Wellington Tramway's Football Club lor the Auckland tramway team that deteated Wellington in the annual match ior the lvolm Shield, which was played yesterday attornoon, took place in the Basin Reserve Pavilion last night. The good spirit in which the game was played made the fathering a" very happy one, and long before the toasts-were finished the speakers experienced great- difficulty in being heard. Three teams—Auckland, Wellington, and Christehurch— usually compete tor the shield, but on this occasion Clinstchureii did not take part. The Mayor (Mr Tronp) presided over a large gathering ot trainwaymen. After the tost "The King," the manager of the Wellington team, Mr. 0. Patehett, in proposing the toast, "The City Council and Tramway Management,' commented on the sportsmanship displayed by members of both teams and the superiority of the Auckland team as a whole, and especially on their backs. He thanked the Mayor and Councillors and the Reserves Committee for allowing the game to be played on the Basin Reserve, aUer the Rugby Union had refused permission to play the match on Athletic Park. . In responding Mr. Troup congratulated the Auckland team on their win and added that, while Auckland was able to }v in ut football, they could not beat Wdhng ton in the running o£ trams. R Peterson and Black also spoke in reply the toast "The Auckland Team." proposed by Mr Gillivry the manager of the Auckland team said that Sev had enjoyed every day they had been iv Wellington, and that they hoped that WQIW-toS would be as well pleased when I'Veime to Auckland next year. After Mr Patchett and tho captain of the Welling on team, Mr. N. Walters, had congratulated Auckland on. then- win Mr. Troup presented the Kolin Shield to Mi. J Corden, captain of the winning team -Other toasts honoured were: "The RetJer" and "Past Players," proposed by M^Coiden and Mr/ M'William respecthe' evening musical items were conKftcd by Messrs, Bla^J.poworth, D.
