TELEPHONE FRAUD

— » CIGARETTES FALSELY OBTAINED ' Leonard Walter Corlett, aged 22, appeared in the Magistrate's Court to-clay, charged- with obtaining 500 cigarettes, valued at £1 17s 6d, from the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. by falsely representing that he was receiving them for Frederick William Schirnack. Chief-Detective Ward said that on 25th. June the company received a telephone message purporting to be from Mr. 'Schirnaek, a brother-in-law of the accused, who had a farm at Makara. The cigarettes were ordered, and it was stated; that a man would later call for them. Corlett later signed for and obtained the cigarettes. The .accused had been before the Court previously, and at present was serving two months' imprisonment' for failing to pay a fine. Tho Magistrate^ [.(Mr. E. Page, S.M.) sentenced Corlett to) twenty-one days' imprisonment, to be served■ at the. expiration of his present sentence.
