DUNEDIN, This Day.: Criticising the Southland proposal for a subsidised South Island-Australia steam service, a local merchant states that any such service must be owned by the merchants themselves. The present trade position io that the South buys very little in Melbourne but much in Sydney, because of the communication facilities. If the South really wants trade with Australia it must divert its purchases to Melbourne when shipping facilities would follow trade.
