NAVAL OCCASION

■ —: » ■ ■ ■ AUCKLAND HOSPITALITY OBJECTION TO EXPENSE (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. After weighing the essentials of courtesy and hospitality against the necessity for using all the available funds for the relief of unemployment, the City Council decided last evening to hold au at home on the occasion of tho visit of the Japanese warships Idzumo and Yakuma, at the end of July. The fnnctiou was recommended by tho Finance Committee. i Councillor F. J. Phelan objected on the ground, that an expensive entertainment was not warranted, even in the case of distinguished visitors, while unemployment continued to give such concern. The Mayor Mr. G. Baildon, said that it had been mentioned 'that the function might cost £300. Whatever amount was spent it would include a large portion for labour. Among the visitors would be a member of the Japanese Royal family, and it was the duty of the council to extend courtesies which were internationally recognised. "Why not cut out the suppers after council meetings," said • Councillor A. J. Entrican. : "Somebody said something about the rivers of champagne, but I hope that there will be nothing so indecent," said Councillor A. J. Stallworthy. "It is not fair to connect unemployment with our duty to the visitors."' ■ .\ The Finance Committee's suggestion was adopted, Mr. F. W. Brinsden remarking that consideration might be given to dispensing with the supper at the function itself.
