DIOCESAN SYNOD

» THE CHURCH SCHOOLS "PIOUS RESOLUTIONS" The Diocesan Synod resumed its sessions yesterday afternoon and again in the evening, the Bisho of Wellington, Dr. T. H. Sprott, presiding. A resolution was passed approving of the appointment of an honorary crganiser for the'r-Cliurch schools in the diocese. During discussion on the question, the point was made that people were holding back from supporting Church schools, - waiting to see what happened to ihe Bible-in-Schools Bill. Cne speaker said that year after year Synod passed pious resolutions about Church;schools,1.and did nothing; in the meantime each year they grew colder and colder and the number of schools became less owing to the apathy of Church people. This was borne out by tho board's report, which read as follows: —."Hawera School has been closed, and other schools have found it diffi-. cult to carry on financially. Tho board has drawn attention in previous years i. the serij\i« falling-off in subscriptions and other voluntary offerings. They would again pom.out that it is essential that the income be largely augmented if the board is to carry out the functions assigned to i by Synod.'.' A motion was moved by Mr. J. W. Henderson, and passed, to tho effect that the Diocesan Board,of Trustees be empowered to sell or lease such portions of the Church property at Trentham as in its opinion shall no longer be required for Church purposes. Notices of motion were given regarding the appointment of a select committee to go into the question of setting aside part of the bishopric endowment fund as a retiring allowance, and also with regard io congratulating Mr. "lobert Parker upon his 50 years' tenure of office as organist of St. Paul's ProCathedral. , A telegram containing cordial greeting was received from the Waikato Synod, and it was decided to send one in return. It was announced that the University Women's Club had placed its rooms at the disposal of ladies visiting Wellington in connection with Synod, and that members of Synod had been granted the rights of honorary membership of the Wellesley Club.
